Small Town (Mestecko)

Czech Republic 2003 99 min. color 35mm
This comedy about the arrival of free market capitalism is set in an emblematic village named? Small Town. It unfolds with the wit and drollery in the Czech tradition, and is a fine example of "the change" -the sometimes funny, sometimes awkward transition that leads to freedom but has undeniably messy aspects. At the time of this writing, Ms. Livia Klausová, First Lady of the Czech Republic, is expected to be present. "A sour little Czech village fails miserably but nobly at capitalism in the subversive social comedy Small Town. Helming debut from popular thesp Jan Kraus (Seducer) is a cockeyed valentine to the kind of resolute pluckiness in the face of adversity that is a hallmark of Czech culture and cinema...
